FOLK PICTURE OF SINH VILLAGE - THE ORIGINAL CULTURE OF HUE

Together with paper flower of Thanh Tien village, the folk painting of Sinh village plays a great role in contribution to the spirit culture of Hue people in every spring for a long time ago.

Sinh village belongs to Phu Mau province, Phu Vang district, Thua Thien Hue province. The craft of making folk picture in Sinh village was appeared 400 years ago; it’s famous in Hue city and near regions till now. Sinh village painting could compare equally with the Dong Ho one which is well-known for folk picture in Viet Nam. However, the original difference is productive purpose; picture of Sinh village makes for worship and it will be burned after worship.  

At the end of the year, people in Sinh village are so busy to prepare the lively pictures for service the Lunar New Year holiday of Hue people. Nowadays, Sinh village has more 30 families still live with this traditional job; the adults work whole day and the children they could help whenever they have free time.

The artist named Ky Huu Phuoc who has strong attachment to craft of making painting more than 50 years say that the need of using Sinh village folk painting is high in every spring.  According to the conception of people, we will be in luck if we use this kind of painting for worship. Therefore the painting here provide not only for Hue province markets but also another areas such as Da Nang city, Quang Tri, Quang Nam province…

About the method of making painting, this artist tells that it demands many skilful techniques for making a picture.  The painting is printed on the wooden board which carved cleverly. The colors of picture make from oysters and some kinds of leaf; there are many steps in manufacturing process for example grinding the oysters, airing the paper, making the colors, carving the wooden board, coloring the painting…Especially, the period of coloring picture requires carefulness, toil and agility of makers.

The folk painting of Sinh Village is the trade village which needs to preserve and develop.
